Some Considerations for Selecting Crossover Points

  • Driver manufacturer's recommended frequency range.

  • Minimum recommended frequency for midrange and tweeter (power handling consideration; favors high crossover points).

  • Assumed power distribution of program material and recommended power handling capacity of individual units.

  • Intermodulation (doppler) distortion consideration favors low woofer to midrange crossover.

  • Good high frequency dispersion favors low crossover points. We would like:
    λ / D ≥ 1.0,   preferably:  λ / D ≥ 1.5
  • Impedance magnitude (compensated) of drivers at proposed crossover frequencies (matching selected nominal impedance value).

  • Avoid predominant voice frequency (500 - 2000 Hz).
