Home Curriculum Vitae Dissertation Abstract Books I've Enjoyed Teaching Philosophy Personal Essays

I've had a web page since around 1998 or 1999.  I started it when I was about to go on the job market with Ph.D. in hand; I thought it would be a good way to show that I was able to use technology and a good way to augment my CV and application letter.  Having a web page has led to some neat connections.  Having my CV up on the Internet has garnered some interesting e-mails from around the world about different aspects of my research into Victorian literature.  People have e-mailed me about my teaching philosophy, and sometimes students check out this web site to try to get a better understanding of just who I am.

I've also really enjoyed getting e-mails from a variety of people wondering if I'm "the" Jennifer Stolpa who was caught in a snowstorm with her husband and infant child.  A movie version of their struggles to survive the ordeal, Snowbound: The Jim and Jennifer Stolpa Story, came out while I was in college, just shortly after the events themselves took place.  While I am not that person, I have been so moved by how deeply touched and inspired people are by her story.  I have enjoyed hearing from people who visit this site, and hope that I continue to hear from others regarding their impressions or reasons for passing by.

Web pages give the briefest of impressions of people.  My interests are wide-ranging and I think that's reflected in areas here, especially under "Recommended Books."  Some of my passions--like baseball and reading--come across pretty clearly.  Others are not as readily apparent.  I've had precious little reason to mention my love of cross-stitching, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or playing pipe organ at church.  While I teach Spanish, so that's present on these pages, I haven't had much reason to mention my passion for other languages: I studied French in college a few years, learned a little Japanese along the way, and have been studying German regularly since January 2004.  My deep attachment and friendship with my sister, Karen, who lives in Plymouth, Wisconsin, is an integral part of my life and many of the memories mentioned here show how often we've taken eventful vacations together and how many baseball games we've watched.

I have enjoyed revamping the organization of this web site with my husband, Jason, since our marriage June 4, 2005.  I am so blessed to know that he will be with me always as we continue to create new pages in our lives...
