“HOWARD GEORGE DIES IN CHICAGO

Fails to Survive Operation He Underwent There on July 24

Howard Stephenson George, 50, native of Marinette who lived at 335 Sheridan Road, Menominee, died shortly after midnight at Presbyterian hospital in Chicago where he became a patient a month ago.  He underwent an operation July 24 for relief from cirrhosis of the liver, but his condition steadily became worse and for several days his death was momentarily expected.

At his bedside were his wife and daughter, Miss Elizabeth, Mrs. E. P. Smith, Mrs. W. S. Carpenter, mother of Mrs. George, and Ferdinand A. Stephenson of Menominee.

Remains Arrive Tonight

The remains were expected to arrive in Menominee this evening and will be taken to McLain funeral home in Marinette pending arrangements for funeral services.

Mr. George was born in Marinette August 17, 1888 and was a grandson of the late United States Senator Isaac Stephenson.  His mother was Ella Stephenson George and he was the last member of the George family.

After getting his early education in Marinette schools, he attended Culver Military academy at Culver, Ind., and later Lawrenceville, a preparatory school for Princeton university.  He was married to Florence Carpenter of Menominee February 24, 1913, and they observed their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary last year.

In Coal Business Here

For several years he was engaged in a garage business at Menominee and in the late years was associated with the Central West Coal company, serving as vice president of the company and in charge of the Marinette office.

During the World War Mr. George held the rank of first lieutenant.  He was a member of the American Legion, Elks lodge of Marinette, Masonic Lodge of Menominee, and was a vestryman of the Episcopal church of Marinette.  His wife and daughter are the only immediate survivors.”

Our research indicates that Howard George’s daughter, Elizabeth, became the wife of Mr. Clifford Belanger.  Elizabeth died in 1973 at the age of 55 in Des Plaines, Illinois.  We do not know what became of Mr. Clifford Belanger.  We would like to think that Clifford Belanger may have been in possession of photo albums or George family heirlooms as Elizabeth was the last living descendant of Ella Stephenson George and William Howard George.  Elizabeth was buried in the Stephenson family plot at Forest Home Cemetery in Marinette.  We have absolutely no information on Clifford Belanger, including whether or not he is dead.  Mr. Belanger remains a person of much interest to us and, if you have any information on him, please contact us
