“THE DEATH OF MRS. W. H. GEORGE
Daughter of Senator Stephenson Died Wednesday Afternoon at Home on
Riverside Ave.
FUNERAL ON SATURDAY P.M.
Mrs. George Was 44 Years Old—Had Lived In Marinette
All Her Life.
Mrs. Ella Jane George, wife of William Howard
George, and the third daughter of Senator Isaac Stephenson, died
Wednesday afternoon. December 16th, after a week’s illness.
She was stricken with paralysis just a week ago in Milwaukee,
and was brought to her home in this city in a special car. Mrs. George
had been in frail health for several years past, but her prostration was
entirely unexpected and came as a great shock to her family and friends.
Her father, Senator Stephenson, returned from
Washington
Tuesday morning. Mrs.George recognized him and was able to converse
with him just as she had with other members of the family. Dr. Kempster,
of Milwaukee, the eminent expert, attended her, but from the time she
was stricken held out no hope for recovery.
Mrs. George was conscious almost to the last and
thruout her illness displayed that sweet and cheerful disposition, which
had always been characteristic of her during her lifetime. The members
of her family were with her constantly up to the time of her death and
the manner in which she accepted her illness was really an inspiration
and a consolation to those at her bedside. She past to the Great Beyond
just as she had lived, a woman of high character, tender and devoted to
her husband, to her children and to her family.
Mrs. George is survived by her husband, William H.
George, and two sons, Howard
Stephenson George, aged 20, and
Isaac Stephenson George,
aged 10, and her parents, Senator and Mrs. Isaac Stephenson; five
sisters, Mrs. Joshua Hodgins, Mrs. Harry J. Brown, Mrs. Ralph Skidmore
of this city, and Mrs. J. Earl Morgan of Oshkosh and Mrs. Nelson
Ludington of Chicago, and two brothers, I. Watson Stephenson of this
city and Grant Stephenson of Wells, Mich.
She was born in Marinette forty-four years ago.
She grew to womanhood in this city. She was educated in the public
schools and later flourished at Highland Hall in Highland
Park ,
Ill. She spent several years in Washington
with her father when he was a member of Congress and in 1883 with her
sister, Mrs. Joshua Hodgins, made a trip to
Europe. On November 3d, 1887, she was wedded to
William H. George. Mrs. George was a woman of unselfish disposition,
kindly natured, and those who knew her will all remember the sweet
influence of her good life. It was marked by many acts of charitable
kindness, which only those whose lives were made happier by them will
ever know. The funeral will take place Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home, 1857 Riverside avenue, the Rev. F.
S. Penfold officiating.”
