WSMA Jazz Improvisation Event

IAJE-Wisconsin is proud to have been the driving force behind the jazz improvisation category for our WSMA State Solo and Ensemble Festivals!  In much the same way as established categories, this jazz improvisation option provides wind, string, vocal, and percussion students the opportunity to perform an improvised solo with a play-a-long CD for critical evaluation.  Click the highlighted text to see the   WSMA Jazz Improvisation List  for 2005-2006.

To learn more about the event go to WSMA State Solo and Ensemble Festivals,go to their site by using this link: WSMA

SONG FOR MY FATHER

Class B - 1083-3

Important Recording:

"Song For My Father - The Horace Silver Quintet"

   Blue Note CDP 7 84185 2

   recorded October 26, 1964

Personnel:

Horace Silver – Piano, Joe Henderson - Tenor Sax, Carmell Jones - Trumpet

Teddy Smith – Bass, Roger Humphries - drums

Important things to consider when working on Song for My Father":

Historic Background:

This piece was actually written by Horace Silver and dedicated to his father (who incidentally appears on the cover of the original album with a cigar in his mouth).  John Tavares Silver (Horace's father) was born on the Island of Maio, one of the Cape Verde Islands where Portuguese and the Brazilian culture predominated.  In February of 1964, Horace Silver visited Brazil and was reminded of his father and was impressed by the authentic Brazilian Bossa Nova Beat (not just straight 8th notes on the high hat).  He tried to incorporate that authentic feel into the piece.  Listen carefully to the drums in the original recording and hear the accents as played throughout especially in the ride cymbal and cross-stick pattern.  Also be sensitive to the accents in the bass.

Thematic Tips:

Listen carefully to the horns on the original recording when learning to interpret the written melody.  Notice how they play the 16th note triplets as ornaments and how they fit into swing feel of the overall melody.  Play along with the original recording until you can phrase the line in exactly the same way as Joe Henderson and Carmell Jones, try to copy them nuance-for-nuance!

Vocabulary and Harmonic Suggestions:

The best way to work on improvisation:  transcribe vocabulary from important recordings while you learn chord/scale information.  “Song For My Father” is in F minor overall, so familiarize yourself with the F minor pentatonic and/or F blues scale as a point of departure.  However, the harmonic rhythm of the piece is in slow, almost modal “chunks”, so be able to play in C minor, Db dominant, etc. as well. Listen to the recorded solos and copy some of their vocabulary while you learn to play through the chord progression using chord/scale information.  As with almost any Horace Silver tune, you should quote the blues often.  Work up some nice blues licks and listen to where Horace placed his bluesy ideas.  Check out Joe Henderson’s improvisation for a good beginning to your solo.
